United against disinformation: EDMOeu in numbers
As one of the 14 national and multinational hubs within the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), BENEDMO is part of a unique professional community active across all EU member states and Norway. When EDMO launched in June 2020, its mission was clear: to build an interdisciplinary, cross-border network that would enhance Europe’s understanding of and collective response to online disinformation.
What followed over the next four years was a remarkable journey — bringing together thousands of relevant actors in a rapidly evolving environment, connecting and empowering communities across Europe. For Belgium and the Netherlands, BENEDMO joined this network when it started its activities in 2023.
Disinformation spreads rapidly and on a large scale — but so does our network. Both at the central EDMOeu level and within the 14 EDMO hubs, the reach, adaptability, and impact of activities and outputs in fact-checking, digital media literacy, research, and policy analysis highlight the crucial role this community plays in strengthening our societies’ responses to disinformation, even during unexpected crises.
The selection of figures below offers an overview of what our network has achieved so far in its core activities. As we look toward the next chapter of EDMO, these numbers also serve as an inspiring visualization of what this relatively young network can accomplish — and why it is vital that its work continues.
